Welcome to Habit of Husbandry.

I’m so glad you’re here.

This is a place for you to gather information, without sacrificing inspiration, for the care and stewardship of your animals, farm, and hearth.

It’s the homesteading landscape as viewed through the somewhat kaleidoscopic lens of a veterinarian & homesteader, wife & mama, home cook & health geek, scientist & Christian.

I’m here to help backyard farmers, rural stalwarts, and resolute homesteaders thrive; building a reservoir of know-how to draw from as resource-resiliency & sustenance-autonomy grow ever more essential. But I’m also here to help keep the fire of your love kindled for this way of life.

This reader & fellow writer describes HoH as,

“…like having a veterinarian for a neighbor, plus encouragement and an infusion of gratitude on the side”.

You’ll see animal husbandry as our central theme, but as you’ll discover, husbandry is like the aroma of bacon frying - it permeates everything.  So we won’t be able to help ourselves but to follow its delightful wafts into the kitchen, garden, larder, & the back forty.

My roots are in the homesteading community. I was raised here, I’m raising my children here, and I left from corporate veterinary medicine to give it all I can.

I don’t promise pretty.

I do promise real.

And I’m committed to providing practical, usable tools for the furtherance of your husbandry goals & endeavors, as well as seasonal encouragement from trenches.

Why pay for a subscription?

It’s my heart to put invaluable husbandry information into as many hands as possible, equipping animal stewards to raise healthy animals & to be prepared for what nature sends your way.

To make that happen, I left my job to throw my energy into Habit of Husbandry, which is 100% reader-supported. So rather than corporate agendas, advertising, or Big Tech platforms running the show, my writing and the information I publish here is totally supported by subscribers.

Your paid subscription helps keep me here.

Your subscription means that you and I and a cup of coffee have a little rendezvous via the words on this little screen every week or so. You’ll receive an email containing each post, or you can access posts via the Substack app. The app also gives you access to our Substack chat, where we can talk a little more directly, and I look to you to share your own questions & experiences.

Your paid subscription will tangibly support the work that goes into production of this publication. My hope is to keep all informational articles free. Paying subscribers help directly toward that end.

I hope you find exceptional value in here. And if you do and you’re able, I hope you’ll join my dear tribe of monthly & yearly supporters.

A little about who’s writing to you…

At the core of who I am is a sinner of sinners, saved by grace through the blood of the King of kings.  I’ve walked enough miles and been to the Lord’s woodshed enough to know that His way is the only way. For EVERYTHING.

In my past, I’ve swallowed the world’s lies, chased the world’s offerings, only to be poisoned by its fruit. I’m a walking testimony of the Lord’s willingness to forgive and His faithfulness in bringing prodigals home.

I’m a wife to a devoted husband of 16 years, whose ability to get me to relax and laugh is truly heaven sent. I’m a mother to three of the most amazing earthly treasures I could imagine, of which I am most undeserving.

I’m a farmer and a veterinarian - caring for animals has been as regular in my life as walking. It’s been a constant since farming alongside my parents as a child. I guess by this point, it would be considered a calling.

Living in dirty jeans & greasy aprons.

Loving the people around our tables through food.

Working with animals, working with our hands, working with all our hearts.

And making a habit of it.

Cheers,

Dr. B
