Hey, come feed turkeys with me...

...and let's TALK some turkey

Y’all are a kind of a shy bunch, but I hope to spark a little dialogue here amongst us fiercely independent folks. I get it…as an introvert of introverts, I am intimately aware of the comment-button allergy. But of all the spaces we’re in, THIS is the one for us to get a bit chatty!

We’re in the wild and woolly thick of turkey season, they consume much of our farming attention these days. I’ve already had some great in-person conversations with some of you pioneers regarding raising your own birds for Thanksgiving. Brooder to field to processing to table, there are bucket-loads of variables to manage and plan for.

From ending up with 200 turkeys at harvest time with only 100 of them sold, to losing 98% of my birds in one blistering week - I’ve run the gobbler gamut. I’m here for you to learn from my experience, mistakes, successes, and mishaps.

So come feed turkeys with me and…

…let’s talk turkey!

Raise your hand if you’re raising turkeys this year? How are they coming along? What’s your feeding regimen like? What breed(s) are you raising? Toms? Hens? Both? When & how are you harvesting? What changes would you make for next year?

Still haven’t made the leap in to the giant bird world? That’s ok! What’s holding you back? What do you feel you still need to learn?

And even if you’re one of our Brush Arbor Farmstead customers who’s granted us the privilege of raising of your Thanksgiving bird (thank you ;), knowing more about how your food is stewarded only makes you a happier, wiser, more grounded cook and eater.

Good on you all.

In this video, I take you through my process for feeding 17 week old, Broad-breasted White turkeys. In under 5 minutes, I barely ripple the surface of what is a wide lake of grain lactofermentation information. And I don’t even get into the forage component of their diets, which increases exponentially with each subsequent paddock rotation.

So, there’s still so much to discuss!

I look forward to hearing your perspectives, questions, concerns, inquiries, anxieties, what-have-you, and digging into turkey husbandry as we enter the final stretch before Thanksgiving.

Brooding, feeding, fermenting, feeder construction, forages, shelters, diseases, deficiencies, predators, processing, packaging, cooking…it’s ALL fair game.

Don’t be shy…tap that comment button and fire away.
